Info

My name is Rob Zylstra and I live in North Vancouver, BC. Even though I would probably classify myself as a big geek now I wasn’t one in high school, nor was I a “jock” but I did have friends on both sides and it was because of my art. I loved to sketch all of the time and people really wanted to know me because of it. I started drawing ACDC and Mötley Cruë with felt pens [unfortunately, no Sharpies back then] on the back of jean jackets to make extra money and eventually worked up to window painting and logo designing [with black Pigma Microns before computers or software].

Now, I work as a handyman in order to pay the bills but I am still an artist and illustrator. I was self taught although I did attend the Fine Arts Program at Langara College after high school and have taken numerous courses over the years including set design, storyboarding, anatomy for the artist and classes working with hot glass.

For over ten years after college I worked sculpting glass. Mostly sandblasting but I did some stained glass and slumping for a time as well. Soon the two showers a day to get the tiny grains of aluminum oxide out of my butt crack started to loose it’s appeal and I found work as a graphics technician for a large branding/packaging company. It too lost it’s luster after a few years and I decided to do something else I do really well… fix things.

I now manage my own handyman company and love the challenges that every new job brings. No two jobs are alike and no two customers are alike [I've got some stories!].
I have just finished an apprenticeship with published storybook illustrator Geraldo Valerio and am now looking forward to using some of the skills he has passed down to me.
